Overview

MDI Lobster & BBQ, nestled in the charming coastal town of Southwest Harbor, Maine, offers a compelling blend of fresh seafood and smoky barbecue that draws both locals and travelers seeking authentic Maine flavors. Situated right by the water at 126 Clark Point Rd, this restaurant pairs scenic harbor views with a relaxed, inviting atmosphere where diners can enjoy meals either indoors, under a tent, or at picnic tables by the water’s edge.

The heart of the menu beats with classic Maine seafood staples and robust barbecue dishes. Standouts include the Lobster and Ribs Combo—a harmonious fusion of succulent lobster and fall-off-the-bone ribs that showcases the kitchen’s ability to master surf and turf simultaneously. The Justin Lobster Roll, recommended by regulars for its garlic aioli "Justin style" twist, offers a fresh and creamy experience that elevates a seafood sandwich beyond expectations. Other notable dishes like the Fried Haddock Sandwich and the Thai BBQ Ribs Special balance traditional coastal fare with creative BBQ influences.

Appetizers such as the Grilled Street Corn and Lobster Mac & Cheese reflect the kitchen’s care in blending smoky and buttery tastes, while desserts like the Pie of the Day and homemade Maine Blueberry Crisp round out the meal with a homey touch. Vegetarian visitors also find thoughtful options with offerings like the dry rub cauliflower, proving the kitchen’s versatility beyond seafood and meat.

What truly sets MDI Lobster & BBQ apart is its dedication to hospitality. Owners and staff maintain a genuine connection with guests, often engaging personally to ensure every plate hits the mark. This attentiveness, combined with high-quality, fresh ingredients, creates a dining experience that feels both special and comfortably familiar. Patrons repeatedly note the friendly service and the owner’s hands-on approach, which adds warmth to the already scenic harbor setting.

Ideal for families, couples, and anyone eager to savor Maine’s coastal bounty alongside expertly smoked BBQ, MDI Lobster & BBQ offers a balanced yet bold menu suited for varied tastes. Whether it’s a vacation meal after exploring Acadia National Park or a casual dinner by the water, guests can expect fresh seafood, hearty barbecue, and a welcoming atmosphere that beckons return visits.

Great seafood and BBQ place right by the water (you can eat in the tent or on the tables near the water). Went with my parents twice on our last two nights of vacation, it was so good the first night and the owner suggested we come back again for the ribs. Over those two nights we ordered the clam chowder, fried shrimp, whole bellied clams, pulled pork, lobster roll, and ribs. Everything was fresh, delicious, and well worth the price. The staff is also incredibly friendly and greeted as soon as we walked in. The owner even went around to every table to make sure everyone enjoyed their meals. Only issue was the pulled pork wasn't hot the first night and he went back to the kitchen, addressed it immediately, and offered us some commentary BBQ sauce because my dad had said he enjoyed it so much. If I go back to the Southwest Harbor area again, I will definitely be going back. Could not recommend enough.

Two experiences here! Our favorite restaurant in Southwest Harbor… absolutely 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #1, came at 7:10pm for dinner and they happened to run out of BBQ from dinner rush… no worries, our family each got the fish ‘n’ chips special and were very happy with the food and portions! Enjoyed the beautiful Maine sunset over the water. Owner/manager gentleman came out to check on us, apologize about bbq sold out, but encouraged us to come back for it the next day! #2, Returned here for BBQ lunch the next day and we were absolutely delighted. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone delicious, the brisket was tender, the lobster was fresh, and the sides were all wonderful! All the staff were tremendously courteous and professional both times… this place just knows how to treat customers right Would 100% recommend this place to any visiting family, friends, or anyone reading this review!

My vegetarian spouse ordered the dry rub cauliflower appetizer, and it was delicious. She also ordered the street corn and loved it. If you’re a vegetarian visiting this place, the cauliflower and corn could be enough for your meal. I ordered the fried haddock sandwich and pork empanadas. The pork empanada filling was tasty but the dough was raw and needed to be fried more. The fried haddock sandwich is a must try. The sandwich only came with fries. Would be nice to have at least one other side option besides fries to select instead of having to buy an extra side for another five or six dollars. Fries were average.

This place was amazing. The lobster was delicious but the curve ball was dropping a half rack with it and the sides were money. The beans had about as much meat as beans and the greens were seasoned perfectly. The best part is the staff was super friendly and made us feel very at home. This place checked all the boxes for my family, highly recommended!

Came here on a whim for lunch to get some lobster rolls and BBQ after busy morning exploring Acadia, and was not disappointed. Order at the counter and get a table in the picnic area overlooking the harbor. Be sure to get your lobster roll "Justin style" with garlic aioli!

Great BBQ, excellent atmosphere, and friendly service. We loved the chicken, crumbly corn bread, lobster Mac, and blueberry "crisp". The blueberry crisp was not crispy - more soupy - but oddly super tasty. They serve alcohol and allow dogs. Cool views

Excellent choice to stop for picnic/camping feel dinner. Enjoyed BYOB on picnic tables with top notch food. Pick up your order at the counter on a picnic tray with utensils, served fresh & hot in to-go type containers (our meals fit in containers with lids, unlike other diners with the full lobster meals). The steamers were delicious, along with the tasty lobster roll with plentiful meat, and the Nashville chicken sandwich was “bang bang” delicious, as quoted by the one of us who ate that. I even loved the French fries! Blueberry pie was good. Cole slaw could have passed on - not as soft as I prefer. Staff was friendly, and the area was clean and well kept. We were even checked on at our picnic table. Probably will return for another meal on this same trip!!

I had the lobster and ribs with a side of Mac and cheese and potato salad. Best lobster I ever had! Ribs were absolutely delicious! Mac and cheese was amazing and the potato salad was kinda just like any ol potato salad to be honest. The staff was super friendly and helpful. My wife had the tacos and even though cilantro tastes like soap to her she still finished them because they were delicious! It was a great find during our trip to Acadia! Hats off to you!
